Stories of Change
Two Choices . . .
Mark's day just wasn't going according to plan. His car wouldn't start that morning and he was late leaving for work. Then, the traffic was backed up, making him even later. He got into the office and his desk was piled high with messages and he had missed his first meeting. It was an important meeting, too. The day started out clearly not according to plan. He should have been angry but something inside of him knew it was as it needed to be... all was in order. Somehow, he felt calm and appreciative for the time. He spent the time waiting on the highway listening to a CD he had wanted to hear for weeks and then, clarifying what he wanted to do next in his life. He had lots of quiet space, something he rarely had with a family of 4 and an engineering department to run. He thought long and hard about the discussion that he and I had earlier in the week. The kids were in preschool or elementary school and if they were going to move overseas, now was the time. He realized how much he wanted to live overseas and move up in the company. He knew that the time for him was now, but did anyone else. He made a decision to make an appointment with his boss and talk over his career.
As he sat down at his desk and began to go through the messages on his desk, his boss's secretary called to set up a meeting. Mark was a bit concerned as he hadn't talked to Jesse who had stepped in for him in this morning's meeting as yet. Jesse wasn't available when he tried to reach her the rest of the morning, so he went into to meet his boss without any knowledge of how the meeting had gone that morning. He trusted all was well and was excited about having the opportunity to talk with Brian so soon.
When Brian started the meeting, Mark was surprised that Brian was mostly interested in hearing about what Mark wanted to do for his next career steps. They talked long and in great depth about the company's plans, Mark's interests and Brian's desire for Mark to play a role in the future. Brian also talked about how impressed he was with how Mark developed his staff... and the good job that Jesse had done that morning. It was quite clear that she was ready to take Mark's place and time for Mark to move on. Two months later, Mark and his family were planning their move overseas. Mark was going to be the new General Manager of their newest solar plant.
Shaman Coach, Shamanic Change
In my heart and soul I know that we are all Shamans. Deep inside all of us we "know." We know what is true. We know what we want. We know what is right and what we need to do next.
We have access to deep inner knowing that holds the answers to our questions. As we connect to this "knowing" we connect to our creativity and happiness, our deep love of life and living in the flow of life and nature... even in this speeded up world with many responsibilities and constant change. As we connect, the once complex seems to become simple. Life is in flow.
To reach this place, we must learn to accept ourselves, look for the lessons and understanding in what are noticing in our lives... it is an inner path with outer views. The Shamanic Coach steps in and out of your system and holds safe space and guides the clients along their path to inner connection with love and deepening questions.... to trust your inner "knowing" ---to create a fluid and fulfilling life.
Designing Shamanic Change is a larger version of the individual. When change happens fluidly, we tend not think much about it. There was no stress or strain. It just unfolded. We were in flow and it seemed little effort was required. Changes large and small, vast and near just seemed to happen... two organizations merged together into one, whole scale change seemed to just emerge overnight, effortlessly. But, did they just happen?
In reality, there was intent behind them and in many cases someone or a core group designed the process that held the space as the needs of the organization emerged to come together and move in the direction that was chosen. The holders of the space, or designers or facilitators, listen deeply to what is going on now and relate it to the whole of where the organization chooses to go , designing space for the next steps to emerge, for learning to occur that brings them closer to their chosen outcome.
The work for the Shamanic Change Agent is in the listening, feeling and asking the questions that enable this happen and most importantly, to hold safe space for the organization to grow as it chooses organically... The work for the individual in the organization is to keep learning, clarifying where they are, where they are going and what is important to them.... to choose their next steps and deepen their relationship to the whole of the organization and its community.
Shamanic change takes a lot of work, but not work feels like work. It takes discipline and fortitude to follow-through, and awareness when to make adjustments. This change comes from within the system, not outside... it is change that lasts, not a quick fix.
In what relationships or situations are you a Shaman? Do you hold safe space for others to learn and grow in the direction they choose? Are there situations you would like to do this more? What steps can you take to hold the space, to co-design change and provide opportunities for others to explore and connect with their inner spirit on the large scale or at the individual level?
