This is a live taped EFT session that Sandy did for Roberta for this holiday season. First Sandy goes over the tapping points. Then she works with Roberta on the issue: "I am worried about over eating and indulging this holiday." As is usual, we reworked the issue to one of feeling overwhelmed and then out of control.

Thank you,
Sandy and Roberta

Unfortunately our first efforts at recording a conference call turned out to have troubles. Not only is there an echo on my voice, you will need it turned up to the top volume to hear Sandy. For this we are making it available to all Guests who are logged in. Thank you for your patience.

PART ONE: This is the first 16 minutes of the teleclass which provides some background to EFT and goes through the tapping points.

Roughly 1,090 SmartBrief on Leadership readers answered last week’s question: Considering the current economic climate, what is your company’s position on business travel?

We are cutting down on business travel across the board, except in situations of absolute necessity — 415 votes, 38.1%

We are encouraging greater use of video/tele/Web conferencing as an acceptable substitute and a way to limit travel — 285 votes, 26.2%

Our current levels of business travel are still essential for business development and deals — 246 votes, 22.6%

We are cutting back by sending fewer people on a given trip — 98 votes, 9%

We expect business travel to increase in the next year or two — 46 votes, 4.2%

Let’s face it. No surprise here. We all know that the first things that get cut in any kind of business downturn are training and travel. What is different than even 10 years ago, is the improvements in alternate conferencing technologies. Even with good cash flow, often video/tele/Web conferencing makes good business sense. Think of all the time “lost” in traveling thereby productivity. These technologies do not have to be a poor substitute. With proper design and delivery, they can be a very viable choice.

For this reason, 1-Focus International has begun to offer short teleclasses that can be attended live or listened to via audio at a future date. Roberta has been trained in teleclass delivery and has been offering teleclasses for more than six years successfully. Our initial series is based on EFT: “Living in Your Limelight.” For more information and registration instructions click here.

By the way, we love these short takes on Leadership from SmartBrief.

I recently had the opportunity to working with a group of strong leaders who where struggling with the challenges of building a cohesive team. It wasn’t surprising to anyone when they got the report back from the online 5 Dysfunctions of a Team Assessment. The results were low on four of the five dysfunctions.

Their organization systemically encouraged operating in silos and through the use of individual style assessments, it was clear that the individuals were not by nature ones who were inclined to working together in a team setting. In the words of one member, “We get the results in spite of ourselves.” Thus on the surface they had “two strikes” against them. However, each one recognized the value and synergies of building and committing to working as a team. More importantly, they had a leader who was willing to admit her mistakes and be vulnerable in front of the team. With her modeling, each one slowly began to open up more about themselves, their needs and their values. For the first time the team was able to discuss a highly emotional situation and come to a conclusion. This represents just the beginning for them in their quest to become a cohesive team.

Team builders will, at one time or another, face the challenge of fostering group harmony in groups where there is inevitably going to be flaws due to human nature. According to author Patrick Lencioni, human beings are inherently dysfunctional. Too often, leaders try to unite dysfunctional teams. Therefore, team builders must recognize and drive groups to overcome certain behavioral tendencies, many of which are negative and can bring down an entire organization.

The purpose of our program is to align the team under a common vision and direction while taking into account different objectives and needs. As stated in the Participant Material of Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the objective is simple: To make substantial progress to becoming a more cohesive team.

1-Focus International is using the workshop material and assessment based on The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team Program may appear to be a two-three day workshop, but it is, in fact, based on practical needs and results. It has been designed by the author of the book to provide a structure and methodology for senior teams to become high performing. It is based on a simple and proven model using exercises that Fortune 500 companies have found useful.

For an excellent review of both the book AND the model check out this posting from the Practice of Leadership Blog.

Roberta of 1-Focus and Gavin Clutterbuck of Chex.ch are co-sponsoring an exciting new team building event on the evening of Thursday, November 28th at Gavin’s professional kitchen in Geneva, Switzerland. This is unlike ANY training or team building you have experienced before. We will be taking participants into the workings of a real commercial kitchen and experience what it really takes to work collaboratively under production pressures.

This is not your typical “team building” activity. While it is “fun” and can create some bonding, it is not simply a social event. Nor is it a watch and “learn” event. This is a carefully thought out simulation that teaches skills as well as the fundamentals of what it takes to develop a strong and high performing team. What you will learn is directly applicable to the modern work environment.

Gavin Clutterbuck has offered his Team Building evenings to corporations for the past year and wanted to take what he had to offer to the next level. We at 1-Focus International are excited by Gavin’s approach because it met our three criteria for a well grounded activity:

Foster our philosophy and value of collaboration

Provide real experiences that were transferable to the day to day experiences of organizational life

Introduce key concepts that we use to help individuals and organizations achieve meaningful, accelerated and sustainable results

It seemed like the perfect collaborative arrangement when Chef Gavin and I first met. His slogan is “Food is our Passion” and the tag line for 1-Focus International is “Where Passion Creates Results”. However, today it seems like very few individuals experience any passion from their work. Why is that? From our experience one of the key missing ingredients (catch the metaphor) is a feeling of engagement in the process. Individuals lack a sense of connection and this comes from not having a commitment to a shared vision. This workshop is the first step in understanding what makes teams really work.

Sandy and I arrived home from Edinburgh yesterday after presenting at the International Association of Facilitators. Based on our White Paper: Leading Cross Cultural Re-engagement: Creating Post Merger Identity. We were very pleased with both our simulation and the caliber of those who chose to participate. It was full of emotion and we hope solid learning. Nineteen joined us and all stayed throughout the full three hours. The workshop represented an abbreviated simulation to help individuals understand the three key issues when merging companies, departments or team.

For a summary of the white paper and how to obtain your own copy, click here.

You probably can’t tell from the picture, but on the floor is a model of a”transportation vehicle” made from Play Doh. Upon entering the room, each participant received their own mini tub of various colours of Play Doh, which was used to begin the process of creating a unique company vision. The simulation continued with the merging of the two companies and subsequent challenges the transition team faces in the real world. This workshop covered two of our seven steps for collaborative change.

We didn’t know this at the time, but two months ago, Sony Bravia went to New York to film the ad below. They used 2.5 tonnes of Plah Doh versus our 2 oz. each. A short making of the ad can be found here. Hope you enjoy.

The weather was great and Edinburgh is a beautiful city. This shot of the church in front of the Castle was the very first thing that I saw getting off the shuttle bus from the Airport. It was then a 15 minute walk (I took the public bus for a pound) to the Bed & Breakfast we stayed at. It was then a short walk back up to the conference centre. Sandy had rented a car and on Sunday afternoon we took a drive up the coast of Scotland.
